Reflections on Boston: Why is it that whenever I move, I come up with a better place to move?

Oh my god… Why am I even blogging right now? I have so much to do!! Thank you to my readers–it’s because I know you’re out there reading that I push myself to post everyday.

Thanks also to the well-wishes for the move. I’m excited about the new place but it’s all very bittersweet. I’m leaving my two best friends, who are moving to Queens. We’ve only lived together for 2 years but they were excellent roommates. Of course I’ve known one of them for 7 years and one for 9. Crazy! So I know we’ll always be close, and are literally only 1.5 hours away from each other at our new apartments.

So now I’ll be living alone… it’s a scary thought. I’ve never lived alone! But it’s also very exciting. I did A LOT of shopping today and I’m starting to feel like it’s going to be a really cute place when I have everything unpacked. That is, if I ever get my packing done.

Game On at Fenway ParkI also had an excellent weekend in Boston–don’t worry, I will tie this in with book publishing… sorta. Meredith and I went to Game On, a bar next to Fenway Park, for drinks and nachos while we watched the Patriots game. I arrived just before halftime to find out that Tom Brady had been injured! I was shocked–and even more shocked to find out this morning that he’ll be out the entire season! It’s so heartbreaking that I really can’t think about it any longer… But I’m trying to remain optimistic. The Pats were the underdog not long ago and may face that title again: it will be an excellent challenge for the guys and will only make them stronger.

Boston harborWatching Ryan Adams at the Pavilion by the Harbor was completely surreal. He played lots of the songs I love and even played some amazing new songs. I can’t wait for him to record them and release them, which, knowing Ryan, will take all of two days. Watch for his new one “Sinking Ships”–breathtaking. And it was just too awesome that while he sang “Why Do They Leave” (a gorgeous ballad-y tune), I happened to look over toward the harbor to see a large sailboat all lit up, sailing by in the twilight. Surreal, I tell you.

We also walked around the city with my Serbian/Bostonian friend Bojan and had a wicked awesome time. It’s such a gorgeous city that I could totally picture myself there. My family is all from the Boston area, so it seems only natural that I would feel almost at home there. I say “almost” because I have a really hard time with cities. I love to visit, but it’s really difficult to imagine living in one–I’m much more at home in suburbia. Only two times have I visited a city and thought I could really live there: D.C. and now Boston. I’ve never felt that way about NY and I doubt I ever will. But the great thing is that there are a lot of publishing opportunities in Boston and it would be very easy to live in a suburb and commute into the city… It’s something I can definitely imagine myself doing one day.

In the meantime, I’ll be wicked pumped to cheer on the Boston teams from afar!
