Funny how a career in publishing means a lot less reading…

Published by gruffalo84 at 4:13 pm under A career in publishing, Books I like Edit This

What is with that? Since I started working full time in publishing (on the 22nd it’ll be a full year), I’ve had so little time to read for pleasure. It takes me forever to get through a book these days–even a book I’m really enjoying, like David Sedaris’ When You Are Engulfed in Flames. But when I get home after staring at text all day, the last thing I want to do is read.

Furthermore, my taste has really changed. I used to love reading dense, historically pertinent, Victorian novels or other classics that actually involve some intellectual muscle. But these days, it takes a lot more effort and I’d rather plop down with something that has a lot less density and a lot more… fluff. But even in that category I’ve been disappointed lately. I mean, my standards are not that high, but I still have issues finding a good, breezy romantic comedy that isn’t ridiculously cliche or overly sentimental.

How do you get yourself in the mood to read? Do you ever feel the need to push yourself and find your own motivation?

Great post. I really enjoy reading and can get through the book in about a week. I do however have to enjoy what I’m reading. I recently read Eat, Pray, Love and it was all I could do to get through the book.

My reading habits have changed over time. Now reading is what I do as I blearily crawl into bed and pass half-an-hour before sleep trying to think of something other than worry.

Often, that means ix-nay on the dense historical anything, and, “Yes, please,” to a category romance or other utterly escapist enjoyment.

    Joda-
I’d love to get back to a book per week schedule. I was considering reading Eat, Pray, Love… one of these days…

    Rosearcher-
That’s exactly what I’m talking about. Glad we’re in the same boat!

Ellen, That’s a good point. I’ve been doing a lot less traveling and when I do travel I nearly always drive. I really should try to get into audiobooks…

    Thanks for sharing!
