Your favorite book of the year?
Yup, I need some inspiration. Although I keep picking up books, I still need to get around to reading them. Sometimes though, it takes the right book to get back into the groove.
Often I find myself re-reading books just because there’s a built-in guarantee that I’ll love it. Because there’s nothing worse than starting a book I hate, but forcing myself through it. I began reading a Debbie MacComber book this year that I hated so much I stopped reading altogether (I never do that).
What’s your favorite book you’ve read so far this year? Do you have more than one favorite? It doesn’t have to be published this year (or this century!).

I had the same experience as you when I read Eat Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert. I forced myself through it but was dissapointed. I love poetry and picked up a book recently by an Asian poet Gu Cheng called Nameless Faces - fantastic. My favorite so far this year.

Mine is called “The Mention of Merrill” by Therese Haberman. It will be in stores by the end of 2009, I hope!
My favourite is still Anthem of a Reluctant Prophet by Joanne Proulx
My current favourite is “The History of Tractors in Ukrainian” by Marina Lewycka. It’s sparkling first novel by someone of Ukrainain origin, who writes extremely wittily and perceptively about two sisters’ concerns about their elderly father’s plan to remarry a much younger woman - and in the process, some dark details about their family history is revealed. Really gripping, especially for anyone with an interest in Easterm Europe. The characters are so well-drawn, and the dialogue is so realistic.
She’s written another book since, but I didn’t find that one nearly as good.
