When you’re waiting for me to update…

Published by gruffalo84 at 10:54 am under A career in publishing, Blogging Edit This

Just wanted to write a quick words regarding updates. When I began this blog, my aim was to update every day. And I did, for about a month. I do need to get in the habit of writing a few posts when I have free time and setting them up to post each day… but like so many people, I get busy with work (don’t you hate when that happens?) and I neglect the blog.

Recently I had a really nice spike in traffic–primarily due to my review of Twilight–and my hit count has stayed high since then. This really gets me motivated to update frequently. But there will always be days I don’t update. I encourage you on those days to check out my Twitter updates because I rarely neglect those! I’ve recently added a widget on my blog that shows my Twitter updates. You can follow me by checking there or you can press the button to “Follow” me if you have your own Twitter page. Of course, don’t be shy to check me out on Facebook–it’s another medium I use frequently.

I’d love to hear what you have to say about this blog. What else would you like to see here? What would you like to see more or less of? Do you feel like you get valuable information here? Or do you read it more for entertainment?

Another concern of mine is that Today.com has introduced a universal theme and it sounds like they prefer everyone to use it. I’ll hold out as long as I can because I do truly enjoy this layout. The new one has more ads and simply isn’t very pretty. But in the meantime I’ll be thinking about what I want my blog to look like permanently. The new theme does allow for a good amount of personalizing, including a custom header. If you have suggestions for how you’d like this blog to look, feel free to leave them here!

In any case, I hope you take a deep breath and hang in there. It’s been a rough week and turning on the news always tends to be a bad idea. A lot of people are thinking carefully about what they really want to do with their lives, which typically involves making sacrifices. People are asking themselves, “Do I want to be happy in my job or financially comfortable in my job?” It’s unfortunate not to be able to be both in many cases. Good luck to you if you’re asking yourself questions like this one.

Finally I’ll leave you with the quote of the day in my inbox this morning:
“I can’t understand why a person will take a year to write a novel when he can easily buy one for a few dollars.” - Fred Allen

I love the quote. And having just spent the last few months writing my third novel–yes, I finished yesterday!–I can see why he’d say that.

But I don’t write just to finish novels. I write because I need to write, money or no.

Congratulations on finishing your third (!) book. That’s incredible. :)
